Women's Soccer: Panthers picked ninth in USA South preseason coaches poll

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) – Averett University, under the direction of Head Coach Carly Pearce, who is in her sixth year, was picked in the preseason coaches' poll to win the USA South Athletic Conference women's soccer title in 2013. The Cougars are the defending USA South Regular Season and Tournament Champions. Last season's titles were the first-ever for the program.

LaGrange, under fifth year head coach Jim Robbins, is picked ninth in the coaches poll. The Panthers set a school record with nine wins and return leading scorers Sydney Dorsey and Brittany Gray

The 2013 season marks the first in the USA South for new Conference members Covenant College and Huntingdon College. Both institutions are former members of the Great South Athletic Conference.

Averett received 12 of 13 first place votes (144 points) as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.

Maryville College finished second in the balloting with 131 points and the final first place vote. Placing third in the poll with 115 points was Meredith College while Piedmont College came in at fourth with 107 points. Newcomer Covenant ranked fifth with 94 points and was followed closely in sixth by Greensboro College who grabbed 92 points.

The women's soccer regular season gets underway on Friday, August 30 as seven teams are in action. The Panthers open their season at Judson (Ala.), the first of three straight road games.

The USA South Tournament will once again head to Martinsville, Virginia as the Southern Virginia Recreation Facilities Authority will host the 2013 Men's and Women's Soccer semifinals and finals. The contests will be held at the Smith River Sports Complex on November 8 and 9. The first round games of the tournaments will continue to be held on the campuses of the higher seeded team and will take place on Saturday, November 2. The top-eight seeded teams after the conclusion of regular season competition will advance to the tournament.
