The LaGrange women's soccer team got off to a good start with a 1-0 win over Florida College on Friday at Panther Field. It was the season opener for the Panthers (1-0), while the visiting Falcons (1-1) suffered their first loss.
Mendi Kallam's second half goal was all the Panthers needed. The Panther controlled the game throughout, finishing with a 19-5 shot advantage, including an 11-2 shots on goal edge.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half. The Panthers' best scoring opportunity came when Elizabeth Mosby's shot hit the near post in the 24th minute. The Falcons' only shot of the half came in the 21st minute as Bibi Ramirez's shot from outside the box went wide.
Kallam got the game winner in the in the 65th minute. She blasted a shot over Jacobs from 25 yards out to put the Panthers up 1-0. Jacobs kept the Panthers from adding to their lead with five more saves in the game.
The Falcons' best scoring chance came in the closing seconds of the game. Jessica Webb broke clear on the right side but had her shot stopped by Panther goalkeeper Chelsea Totaro to preserve the win.
The Panthers host Huntingdon on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.
