Panthers open 2010 season with win over Toccoa Falls
LaGrange, Ga. – Freshman Mary Robertson scored two goals in her collegiate debut to lead LaGrange College to a 4-1 win over Toccoa Falls on Thursday at Panther Field. It was the season opener for the Panthers (1-0), while the Eagles fell to 0-2.
The Panthers reversed a 4-1 loss to the Eagles in the 2009 season opener. Two other freshmen; Shelby Stanfield and Melanie Sommers, scored for the Panthers. Freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Totaro had five saves in her first collegiate start.
Stanfield and Sommers gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals two minutes apart. Stanfield scored from the top of the box 11 minutes into the game for the first goal of the season. Sommers followed up a missed shot to score off the rebound for the game's second goal.
Toccoa cut the lead in half midway through the first half. The Panthers were called for a hand ball in the box to set up a penalty kick. Danae Martin put the penalty kick in the goal to make it 2-1. It remained that score at halftime.
Robertson beat the Eagles' keeper Catherine Boderund 17 minutes into the second half to give the Panthers a 3-1 cushion. She put the game out of reach with her second goal 11 minutes later for the 4-1 final margin.
The Panthers had a 19-11 shot advantage, including a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Panthers controlled the second half, allowing the Eagles one shot on goal.
The Panthers host Judson (Ala.) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
