Lacrosse: Ave Maria edges Panthers 12-11 in three overtime thriller

LaGrange lost a heartbreaker to visiting Ave Maria, falling 12-11 in three overtimes. The Panthers (1-5) had rallied from a seven goal halftime deficit to force overtime.

Ave Maria (2-4) scored the first three goals of the game to lead 3-0. The Panthers came back with goals from Cheyenne St. Germain and Alexis Dillard to make it 3-2.

The Gyrenes shut down the Panthers the rest of the half, scoring six unanswered goals to build a 9-2 lead at halftime.

The Panthers turned the tables on the Gyrenes in the second half. Sydney Garmany scored on a free position goal, then Caroline Murphy scored back-to-back goals to make it a 9-5 game.

Murphy scored her third goal in a five-minute span to keep the Panthers within striking distance. Trailing 11-6 with 16 minutes left, the Panthers got goals from five different players to force overtime.

Kathryn Wood's goal with an assist from St. Germain got the Panthers within one, 11-10. Olivia Monroe got the equalizer with 2:57 left off a free position shot.

The Panthers controlled the ensuing draw control and held the ball for a possible winning shot. Murphy's free position shot in the closing seconds was turned away as the two teams went to overtime.

Ave Maria got the game-winner in the third overtime. Lydia Buckley's fifth goal of the game gave the Gyrenes the 12-11 win.

The Panthers host Greensboro and Ferrum on Saturday and Sunday in USA South games.
