Lacrosse: Panthers set to open 2014 season Sunday against Rhodes

The LaGrange lacrosse team opens its 2014 season Sunday against the Lynx of Rhodes College at Panther Field. Game time is 1 p.m.

Adrienne Berkland starts her third season as head coach for the Panthers. The Panthers set a new team record for wins for the second straight season in 2013; finishing 6-10 overall and 3-5 in the USA South.

The Panthers return senior Kelsey Griffin, who was an honorable mention selection on the USA South All-Conference team last season. Griffin is the program's all-time leading scorer with 110 goals. She led the team in 2013 with 48 goals and 58 points, which was seventh in goals and 10th in points in the conference.

Also returning is sophomore Alexis Dillard and junior Olivia Monroe. Dillard was third on the team with 21 goals, while Monroe had 17. Junior Ashley Davis also finished in double digits in goals with 10. Senior Audrey Fortmann adds depth to the Panther offense.

Senior Kristen Bird, along with sophomores Raquel Manzo and Rachel White return to anchor the defense.

Rhodes is in its first year of fielding a lacrosse team. The Lynx will play at Berry on Saturday before travelling to LaGrange.

After Rhodes, the Panthers host Emmanuel on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. and Columbia (S.C.) on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. The Panthers play six of their first seven games at home.
