Lacrosse: USA South preseason coaches poll votes Panthers fifth

The LaGrange lacrosse team ranks fifth in the 2013 USA South Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll released Wednesday.

The Panthers are starting their second season under head coach Adrienne Berkland. The Panthers were 3-9 last season and 2-5 in USA South play. The Panthers return leading scorer Kelsey Griffin and goalkeeper Chelsea Totaro, both of whom earned USA South All-Conference Honorable Mention honors last season.

This season will be the Panthers' first in the USA South as a full member. Incoming new member Piedmont and current member Meredith are fielding teams for the first time this season.

Christopher Newport has won six straight USA South regular season and tournament championships. The Captains are picked to win it again in the preseason poll. Christopher Newport received eight of nine first-place votes (64 points) as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.

Greensboro finished second in the balloting as The Pride received 53 points and the remaining first-place vote. Close behind Greensboro was Ferrum, who placed third in the poll with 52 points followed by Methodist University in fourth with 40 points. The Panthers rounded out the top-half of the poll in fifth with 32 points.

The 2013 USA South Women's Lacrosse Tournament will be played April 12-13 at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex football stadium in Rocky Mount, N.C. as a part of the USA South Spring Sports Festival.

The Panthers open their 2013 season Feb. 20 at Oglethorpe.
