Lacrosse: Panthers picked seventh in preseason USA South poll

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The USA South released its 2012 lacrosse preseason coaches poll. LaGrange College was picked seventh in the poll.

The Panthers are beginning their third year as a program. This season, they will be under first year coach Adrienne Berkland. Berkland was an assistant for the Panthers last season.

The Panthers were 1-10 overall and 1-5 in the USA South last season. Sophomore Kelsey Griffin returns after leading the team in scoring last season with 26 goals.

Christopher Newport Universitywas picked to win the USA South Athletic Conference 2012 lacrosse title by the coaches. Last spring, the Captains captured both the USA South Regular Season and Tournament titles for the fifth consecutive season.

Christopher Newport received seven of eight first-place votes (49 points) as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting. Shenandoah University finished second in the balloting as the Hornets received 42 points and the remaining first-place vote. Greensboro College and Ferrum College rounded out the top-half of the poll with 38 and 31 points, respectfully.

The Panthers open their season at home Feb. 24 against Augustana (Ill.). The 2012 USA South Women's Lacrosse Tournament will once again be played at Springwood Park in Burlington, N.C. on April 13-14.
