Women's Basketball: Panthers battle past Rust 64-59

LaGrange wrapped up a perfect December with a hard-fought 64-59 win over visiting Rust on Wednesday at Mariotti Gym.

The Panthers finished the month 3-0 and are 5-3 heading into the holiday break. They resume play Jan. 4 at Methodist in the USA South opener.

Caroline Brashier led the Panthers with 18 points. She was only 3-of-13 from the floor but was 11-for-14 at the free throw line.

Alex Wilson had 15 points off the bench, making 6-of-10 shots, including 3-for-6 from 3-point range. Kelsey had 13 points and seven rebounds.

Neither team shot the ball well. The Panthers shot only 32.4 percent in the first half but picked it up in the second half with 44 percent shooting. Rust shot 34.3 percent for the game.

Rust led by as many as eight points three times in the first half. The Lady Bearcats led 21-13 with 7:14 left in the half after Kala Williams' three-point play. Williams led all scorers with 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

The Panthers finished the half with a 12-2 run to lead 25-23 at the break. Wilson had a pair of 3s during the stretch, the second tying the game at 23. Mitchell's layup gave the Panthers their first lead of the game.

Rust would never lead in the second half. A 3-pointer from Morgan McDonald and a jumper by Wilson in the lane pushed the Panthers' lead to 10, 44-34, with 11:49 remaining.

The Lady Bearcats got within three, 51-48, after Williams' trey. But Brasier answered for the Panthers with one of her own to make it a six point game.

The Panthers held off the Lady Bearcats down the stretch. The Panthers' final eight points came at the line to secured the win.
