Women's Basketball: Millsaps powers past Panthers 71-62
Millsaps College powered past LaGrange College 71-62 at Mariotti Gym on Friday night. The Panthers (5-3) were playing their first game since Dec. 4, while the Majors (7-2) made it two wins in two nights against Great South Athletic Conference teams.
Millsaps held the Panthers to 31.6 percent shooting in the game, including only 21.4 percent in the second half. The Majors controlled the rebounding with a 48-34 advantage and outscored the Panthers 41-12 in the paint.
Velvet Johnson led Millsaps with a game-high 18 points. Shante Morton and Janice Okeke each had double-doubles. Morton had 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Okeke had 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Katie Covington had 15 points and six rebounds for the Panthers. Madison McDonald had 13 points and Alex Wilson 10. Wilson hit 3-of-4 3-point attempts.
The Panthers led 35-33 at halftime. They shot 41.4 percent in the half, including making 6-of-9 3-point attempts. Covington and Wilson each had nine points at the break.
Millsaps scored the first eight points of the second half to take a 41-35 lead. The Panthers answered with 11 straight points to go up 46-41. McDonald had six of the points in the run. Covington finished it with a put back of McDonald's missed free throw.
The Majors came back and took the lead for good. Johnson's jumper put the Majors up 52-51 with 13:18 remaining. The Panthers never retook the lead.
The Panthers scored only four points over the final seven minutes in the game. McDonald scored on a layup for the Panthers' final points with 2:23 left.
The Panthers host Hendrix, coached by former Panther assistant Emily Cumming, on Dec. 29.
