Women's Basketball: Panthers roll past Wesleyan in GSAC opener
LaGrange College opened its 2011-12 home and GSAC schedule with a 97-59 win over Wesleyan College on Wednesday at Mariotti Gym. It was the third straight win for the Panthers, now 4-2 overall.
The Panthers had seven players in double-figures with very balanced scoring. Katie Covington had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Caroline Brashier tied Covington with 12 points off the bench.
Summer Bush, Abbey Martin and Alex Wilson all had 11 points. Elizabeth Williams had 10 points and five assists. The Panthers had 10 of the 11 who played in the game score at least two points.
Wesleyan (0-2) played with just seven players. Lindsay Haggerty led the Pioneers with game-highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds. La-Joi Battle had 15 points, while Erinn Williams added 13.
The Panthers never trailed in the game. They quickly took a 12 -2 lead. The Panthers' lead swelled to 19, 25-6, with 11 minutes left in the half as Covington scored off a turnover.
The Pioneers cut the Panthers' lead to 15, 33-18 with 5:34 left in the half. The Panthers finished the half on a 14-4 run to open up a 47-22 halftime lead. Brashier scored all of her points in the half, while Wilson hit 3-of-5 3-pointers.
The Pioneers never got closer in the second half. The Panthers led by as many as 42 on three occasions in the half.
The Panthers play at Salem on Sunday in a GSAC game.
