Women's Basketball: Panthers beat Blue Mountain in consolation game of Millsaps tournament

JACKSON, Miss. - LaGrange College picked up its first win of the 2011-12 season with a 82-73 win over Blue Mountain on Saturday in the consolation game of the Millsaps College Tip-Off Tournament. The Panthers evened their record at 1-1, while the Toppers dropped to 2-5.

For the second straight game Heather Miller led the Panthers' scoring attack. The junior scored a game-high 24 points, while Katie Covington added 17. Hunter Connell made 6-of-8 shots from the floor for 12 points and was selected to the All-Tournament team. Madison McDonald was the fourth Panther in double figures with 10 points.

The Panthers took an early 10-2 lead and led 34-23 with 8:42 left in the first half. The Toppers went on a 17-3 run, capped by Jessie Hayles' three-point play, to take a 40-37 lead. Covington tied the game at 42 with two free throws with 21 seconds left in the half.

In the second half, the Panthers took a 54-45 lead after Stephanie Schuck scored on a layup after Connell forced a turnover at the defensive end. The Toppers came back to tie the game twice, the last at 65-65 with under eight minutes remaining.

Miller scored off the fast break with an assist from Elizabeth Williams to put the Panthers up 67-65. They never trailed again, as the Toppers never got closer than five the rest of the way. McDonald hit a 3-pointer to make it 79-70 and Miller closed out the scoring with two free throws for the 82-73 final.

The Panthers play at Emory on Wednesday and in the Oglthorpe University Classic on Friday and Saturday.
