Panthers top Spelman 70-56
LaGrange ended its two-game losing streak with a 70-56 win in a GSAC game Tuesday at Mariotti Gymnasium. The Panthers upped their record to 15-3 overall and 8-2 in conference play.
Freshman Alex Wilson led the Panthers with 15 points off the bench. Heather Miller and Stefanie Schuck added 12 points each. Leading scorer Katie Covington was held to a season-low eight points.
Shanda Kennedy also had 15 points for the Jaguars (3-12, 2-8 GSAC). Amanda Alexander added 11 points and Jasmine Taylor had a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Panthers were playing their third game in four days. The Panthers shot 35.6 percent in the game, including making 10-of-28 3 point attempts. Wilson was 4-for-8 from 3-point range.
The Panthers trailed only once, 3-2, in the opening minute of the game. The Panthers led 36-25 at halftime. Elizabeth Williams' running jumper at the buzzer finished a 7-1 run.
The Panthers opened the second half with a 12-2 run to open up a 48-27 lead, their largest lead of the game. Schuck and Miller each hit 3s to key the run.
Spelman came back to cut the Panthers' lead to just eight, 54-46, after a 3-pointer by Tiana Welch. The Panthers ran off three quick baskets to push the lead to back to 14, 60-46. The Jaguars never got closer than nine the rest of the way.
The Panthers play at Atlanta Christian on Thursday in a non-conference game at 6 p.m.
