Softball: Panthers upend top-seed Averett 3-2 on Flick's walk-off hit in 11th inning

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - LaGrange knocked off top-seeded Averett 3-2 in 11 innings to advance to the winner's bracket of the USA South Tournament being played at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex.

The Panthers (21-13) will face Greensboro on Saturday at 12 p.m. Averett (33-2-1), ranked 16th nationally, takes on Piedmont in the loser's bracket at 10 a.m.

Senior Christy Flick got the game-winning hit, while fellow senior Olivia Wolfe turned in a record pitching performance.

Wolfe pitched her second complete game of the day, setting new school records for innings pitched in a game and in a doubleheader. She scattered seven hits, walked five and struck out five in raising her record to 11-8. For the day, Wolfe pitched 18 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out 14.

After spotting the Cougars a run in the first, the Panthers came back with two runs in the third to take the lead.

Flick opened the inning with a walk and Lindsey Hogan reached on a bunt single. After both runners moved up on Kalin Oglesby's sacrifice.

Dani Gravett reached on a fielder's choice as Flick scored on an error on the play. Danielle Newbern followed with an RBI single and a 2-1 lead.

The Panthers held the lead until the seventh. The Cougars' tied the game on Samantha Hall's one-out double to send the game into extra innings.

Over the next four innings, Wolfe did not allow the Cougars a hit with only one runner reaching on an error. 

Wolfe walked to lead off the 11th for the Panthers. She moved up to second on Emily Barrs' sacrifice. With two outs, Flick singled to right field as Wolfe came around to score the winning run.
