ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - LaGrange lost a pair of heartbreakers to N.C. Wesleyan in a USA South doubleheader Sunday. The Bishops took the first game 4-3 and the second game 7-6 in nine innings.
The Panthers (19-13) finished their conference schedule with a 14-10 record. They will be the #4 seed at next weekend's USA South Tournament back in Rocky Mount. The Panthers will face #5 seed Huntingdon at 9 a.m. at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex.
In the first game, the Panthers led 3-1 after four innings. Alison Jiles had an RBI single in the third and the Panthers took advantage of two Bishop errors to account for their other two runs.
Dani Gravett had two of the Panthers' four hits in the game.
Gravett started the second game for the Panthers. She went six innings, gave up five runs, walked seven and struck seven. Emily Cauldwell (0-1) went the rest of the way in taking the loss.
The Panthers trailed 5-2 in the seventh with two outs and one on. Emily Barrs kept the inning going with a single and Brooke Turner followed with a base hit as Danielle Newbern scored on the play. Adrienne Little got the Panthers' third straight hit to drive in two more runs, tying the game 5-5.
After a scoreless eighth, the Panthers took a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth. Alison Jiles' sacrifice fly scored Cauldwell to put the Panthers on top, but the Bishops came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the win.
The Panthers play at Wesleyan on Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader.
