The LaGrange softball team lost a USA South doubleheader to visiting Ferrum on Sunday. The losses left the Panthers 9-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Ferrum (10-2, 5-1 USA South) used a five-run inning to take the lead and held off a last inning rally by the Panthers to win the first game 7-6. The visiting Panthers completed the sweep with a 3-0 win in the second game.
Ferrum came back in the fifth with five runs to take the lead and added an insurance run in the seventh to build a 7-3 lead.
The Panthers used the long ball to get within a run in the bottom of the seventh. Newbern hit a solo home run and Olivia Wolfe's two-run blast with two outs made it 7-6. For both Newbern and Wolfe the home runs were their third of the season.
Hogan, Newbern, Wolfe and Adrienne Little all had two hits as the Panthers finished with 12 hits.
In the second game, the Panthers were limited to six hits by six different players. Wolfe (4-3) went the distance in taking the loss.
The Panthers are on the road Wednesday against Piedmont in a USA South doubleheader.
