Softball: Panthers go 1-1 on first day of GSAC tournament
MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The LaGrange softball team split two games on the first day of the Great South Athletic Conference Championship Tournament. The fifth-seeded Panthers beat fourth-seeded Agnes Scott 3-0, then lost 1-0 to top-seeded Huntingdon.
LaGrange (15-23) will play third-seeded Maryville at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The loser is eliminated from the tournament, while the winner advances to play the Agnes Scott/Salem winner at 3 p.m.
Junior Kayla Folds (9-13) pitched both games Friday. The junior allowed Agnes Scott two hits in the first game and four hits in the loss to Huntingdon.
Huntingdon won the second game on a home run by Aleah Payne in the bottom of the sixth inning. Payne's home run broke up a pitching duel between Folds and the Lady Hawks' Bree Giordanna.
Kelbi Burgering had two of the Panthers' five hits in the game. Burgering and Payne were the only players in the game with two hits.
