MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Maryville edged LaGrange 3-2 and 1-0 in a GSAC doubleheader Saturday. The losses left the Panthers 0-2 in the GSAC and 3-9 overall.
Lacee Landrum (0-1) made her first start of the season in the first game. Landrum allowed three runs; two earned, in four innings. She gave up five hits, walked one and struck out two. Kayla Folds pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
The Panthers trailed 3-0 going to the fifth inning. Jordan Berryman singled up the middle with one out. Kate Smith came in to run for Berryman and Emmie Trull then walked. With two outs, Kelbi Burgering scored both runners with a double to left field to cut Maryville's lead to 3-2.
The Panthers put runners on in the sixth and seventh innings. Danielle Newbern had a base hit in the sixth and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt but was stranded. In the seventh, Mallory Muncher had a pinch-hit single with two outs but reliever Sarah Reeder got the final out for the Lady Scots.
In the second game, Folds and Reeder locked up in a pitcher's duel. Maryville (5-7, 2-0 GSAC) pushed across and unearned run in the first inning for the game's only run.
Folds (1-5) scattered eight hits in six innings. She walked one and struck out five. Reeder surrendered seven hits, walked a batter and did not strike out any.
The Panthers put two runners on in the seventh inning after two were out. Courtney Beshel singled to left and Burgering followed with a base hit to move Beshel up to second. But Reeder got the final out to finish the sweep for the Lady Scots.
The Panthers host Rhodes on Friday, Berry on Saturday and Salem in a GSAC doubleheader Sunday.
