Softball: Panthers open season Friday against Brenau

The LaGrange College softball team opens its 2012 season Friday with a doubleheader against Brenau University. The Panthers had their scheduled season opener Tuesday at Reinhardt postponed due to weather.

The first game Friday begins at 3 p.m. with the second game to follow. The two teams will play again Saturday. The first game will start at noon with the second game to follow.

The Panthers are beginning their 10th season under head coach Jennifer Claybrook.  Claybrook is 226-181 as the Panthers' head coach.

The Panthers were 22-19 overall and 7-5 in the GSAC last season. They return 11 lettermen, including two of their top five hitters.

Sophomore outfielder Courtney Beshel was a GSAC All-Freshman selection in 2011. She was second on the team with a .333 batting average, tying for the team lead with four home runs and 21 RBIs.

Junior Megan Wing batted .327 in 35 games with 14 RBIs splitting time between first base and as the designated hitter. Junior third baseman Laura Webber tied Beshel for the team lead with four home runs and 21 RBIs, while batting .293.

Junior Kayla Folds heads the pitching staff. Folds was 7-7 with a 1.87 ERA in 21 appearances. She struck out 57 in 75 innings of work.

Senior Lacee Landrum was 3-3 with a 2.92 ERA in 2011. Sophomore Amanda Stukel appeared in 13 games last season, with a 1-1 record and a 1.56 ERA.
