Softball: Piedmont sweeps Panthers in GSAC doubleheader

Emily Cheek's two-run single in the eighth inning broke a scoreless tie to give Piedmont a 2-0 win over LaGrange and a sweep of their GSAC doubleheader Thursday at the LaGrange College Softball Complex. The Lady Lions (18-10, 7-1 GSAC) won the first game 7-1.

The two losses dropped the Panthers to 17-12 overall and 5-3 in the GSAC. The Panthers play at Agnes Scott on Saturday in another GSAC doubleheader.

The Panthers' Kayla Folds (5-4) and the Lady Lions' Brittany Head locked up in a pitcher's duel for seven scoreless innings. Both teams had five hits. Folds walked three and struck out four, while Head walked one and struck out nine.

Megan McClain started Piedmont's eighth inning with an infield hit, then moved over to third on a passed ball and a sacrifice. Taylor Morgan walked with two outs to keep the inning going and stole second. Cheek followed with the game-winner to left center to drive in the only runs of the game.

In the bottom of the eighth, Folds reached on a one-out single and took second when the ball was bobbled in the outfield. She moved over to third before Head retired the next two batters to end the game.

The Panthers had early opportunities in the game. They stranded nine runners in the game, six in scoring position.

Piedmont took advantage of Panther errors in the first game. All seven of the Lady Lions' runs were unearned, as the Panthers committed four errors.

Kristen Woodard (4-2) took the loss. She allowed six runs on just four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out two in 3-2/3 innings. Folds allowed a run in the final 3-1/3 innings, striking out three and giving up two hits.

The Panthers return home for a GSAC doubleheader next Wednesday against Huntingdon.
