Softball: Panthers sweep Berry with second game rally

ROME, Ga. - LaGrange pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat Berry 3-1 and complete a sweep of the Vikings on Saturday at South Ford Field. The Panthers held off a Viking last inning rally to win the first game 6-5.

The Panthers improved to 17-10, while the Vikings fell to 19-9. The Panthers won three of the four games with the Vikings this season.

Shanna Brumbelow went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI to lead the Panthers' 11-hit attack in the first game. Katie Hein was 2-for-2, while Courtney Beshel also had two hits.

Kristen Woodard started and allowed two runs, only one earned, for the Panthers. Kayla Folds (5-3) gave up three runs in three innings. Danielle LaDuron relieved Folds in the seventh to record her first save.

The Panthers scored two runs in each of the second, third and fifth innings to build a 6-2 lead. Laura Webber had a two-run single in the second. Brumbelow had RBI singles in the third and fifth.

The Vikings rallied in the seventh inning. Chelsea Usher had a two-run double to cut the Panthers' lead to 6-5.

LaDuron relieved Folds and retired the first two batters before walking Katie Stanford to load the bases. Jessica Quesada made a game-saving diving catch of Hailley Oxner's fly ball in right field to end the game.

The Vikings got a first inning run off Lacee Landrum in the second game. Landrum allowed the run and five hits in five innings of work.

The Panthers tied the game in the sixth inning. Beshel led off the inning with a single and moved up to second on a wild pitch. She came around to score on Webber's RBI single up the middle.

Folds started the Panthers' seventh inning with a pinch-hit single. Katie Ison reached on a fielder's choice and Audrey Fortman moved up the runners with a sacrifice bunt.

One out later, Brumbelow singled through the left side scoring pinch-runner Mallory Muncher and Ison to put the Panthers up 3-1.

Amanda Stukel (1-1) pitched the final two innings to get her first win of the season. She allowed a one-out single in the seventh but retired the next two batters to close out the win.

The Panthers host Piedmont in a GSAC doubleheader Thursday.
