Softball: Panthers sweep Agnes Scott for first wins of season

LaGrange swept a doubleheader from Agnes Scott on Thursday at the LaGrange College Softball Complex for its first two wins of the season. The Panthers (2-4) took the first game 5-3 and completed the sweep of the Scotties (0-2) with an 8-2 win in the second game.

Sophomore Laura Webber had a home run in each game. Webber had four hits, scored two runs and had four RBI in the doubleheader. Katie Hein had five hits, scored four runs and had an RBI. Katie Ison also had four hits for the Panthers, who had 20 hits in the two games.

Shanna Brumbelow (1-0) went four innings in the first game to get the win. She allowed three runs, four hits, walked two and struck out six. Kayla Folds allowed only a hit in three scoreless innings to earn a save.

Lacee Landrum (1-2) pitched a complete game in the second game to get her first win of the season. Landrum scattered six hits, allowed only one earned run, did not walk a batter and struck out 11.

The Panthers built a 5-0 lead after four innings in the first game. Megan Wing drove in two runs with a base hit in the first inning. In the fourth, Webber led off with her first home run and Katie Hein and Wing added RBI singles in the inning.

Agnes Scott did all of its scoring in the fifth inning. Morgan Sheridan had an RBI single, while Melanie Ennis capped the three-run inning with a two-out two-run single.

The Scotties took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the second game. The Panthers answered with four runs in the third and three more in the fourth to go up 7-1.

The Panthers took advantage of two Scottie errors in the third and Webber capped the inning with a two-run home run to center field. In the fourth, Hein had an RBI double, while Ison and Webber each had run-scoring singles.

Leading 7-2, the Panthers closed out the scoring in the sixth inning. Brumbelow drove in Ison with a two-out single off the third base bag for the 8-2 final score.

The Panthers host Covenant on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
