Panthers get first win of season at Rhodes tournament

The Panthers built an 8-1 lead against Berry after three innings. Becca Abernathy's two-run double highlighted a four-run first inning. The Panthers added two runs each in the second and third innings. Megan Wing had an RBI single in the second and Katie Hein an RBI double in the third.

Berry got two runs back in the fourth inning. The Lady Vikings pushed across four runs in the seventh to make it 8-7. Danielle LaDuron came on in relief in the seventh to get the final two outs.

The Panthers finished the game with 12 hits. Hein led the way with three hits, including her double, and scored three runs. Holly Hazelwood and Katie Ison each had two hits.

In the day's first game against Millikin, the Panthers scored a run in the top of the first. Ison doubled in Hazelwood, who had reached on a one out infield single.

The Big Blue came back with two runs in their half of the first to go up 2-1. The Panthers came back in the top of the second with two runs to take a 3-2 lead. Hein and Hazelwood had run-scoring base hits in the inning.

Millikin took the lead for good in the third inning with three runs for a 5-3 lead. The Big Blue added a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to push their lead to 7-3.

The Panthers closed within a run with three runs in the top of the sixth. The Panthers had only two hits in the inning and took advantage of a Big Blue error. Millikin added an insurance run in its half of the sixth and held off the Panthers in the seventh to take the win.

Hein finished with three hits for the second straight game. The Panthers had 11 in the game. Hazelwood had her second straight two-hit game.

The Panthers finish the tournament Sunday with games against tournament host Rhodes and another meeting with Milliken.
