Men's Tennis: Panthers sixth in USA South preseason coaches' poll

The LaGrange men's tennis team placed sixth in the 2013 USA South Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll released Wednesday.

The Panthers are starting their first season in the USA South under fourth-year head coach Matt Donnett. The Panthers return three lettermen for the 2013 season, after finishing 2-12 last year.

In addition to the Panthers, the 2013 season marks the first in the USA South for new conference members Maryville and Piedmont. All three schools are former members of the Great South Athletic Conference.

North Carolina Wesleyan was the coaches pick in the poll to win the 2013 USA South title.  The Bishops captured the conference regular season and tournament championships last spring for the fourth consecutive season.

North Carolina Wesleyan received eight of nine first-place votes (64 points) as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting. Christopher Newport earned second in the poll with 53 points.

Methodist placed third in the poll with 47 points while Averett University followed in fourth with 46 points and the final first place vote. Newcomers Piedmont, LaGrange and Maryville followed in fifth, sixth and seventh with 38, 24 and 19 points, respectively. Greensboro and Ferrum rounded out the voting.

The 2013 USA South Men's Tennis Tournament will be played April 12-14 on the campus of North Carolina Wesleyan as a part of the USA South Spring Sports Festival in Rocky Mount, N.C.

The Panthers open their 2013 season at home Feb. 28 against Emmanuel.
