Led by freshman Melvin Bass, LaGrange got its first win of the 2013 season, blanking Warren Wilson 4-0 on Sunday at Panther Field. The Panthers evened their record at 1-1, while the visiting Owls dropped to 1-3.
The Panthers controlled the match from the opening kickoff. They outshot the Owls 19-11, including a 7-2 shots on goal advantage.
Bass scored twice for the Panthers, who bounced back from a season-opening loss to Columbia International. Junior Adrian Vakerics and senior Kevin Folsom each had a goal.
Vakerics opened the scoring in the 19th minute. He beat a defender and put the ball past goalkeeper Pat Albright for the Panthers' first goal of the season.
Less than four minutes later, Bass got his first collegiate goal. He took Toby Haney's pass and shot the ball over Albright into the upper corner of the net to up the Panthers' lead to 2-0.
In the 37th minute, Vakerics was fouled in the box. Folsom put in the penalty kick as the Panthers took the 3-0 lead into halftime.
Bass closed out the scoring in the second half. After taking a pass from Raymond Haas, Bass shot the ball past Albright for the 4-0 final score.
The Panthers host Oakwood on Sept. 8.
