Sidney Smith scored two goals to lead Piedmont to a 4-1 GSAC win over LaGrange on Tuesday at Panther Field. The Panthers slipped to 1-7 overall and 0-1 in the GSAC, while the Lions improved to 3-5-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first 58 seconds of the match. Jeremy Ham's header was misplayed by the Lions' defense allowing an own goal.
The Lions scored twice in a two-minute period to take a 2-1 lead. Nick Weatherby scored unassisted, then Smith scored his first goal on an assist by Mason Flynn to give the Lions the lead for good.
Smith scored his second goal just six seconds before halftime. Vincent Thomas sent a crossing pass and Smith headed the ball past goalkeeper Donnie Palmer.
The Lions closed out the scoring in the second half. Stephen Sherfy, with an assist from Smith, scored in the 67th minute for the 4-1 final margin.
The Panthers host Tennessee Temple on Saturday at 3 p.m.
