Men's Soccer: Ferrum tops Panthers in season opener

EMORY, Va. - Ferrum got two goals and an assist from Asa Fox to top LaGrange 3-1 at the Emory & Henry Classic on Saturday. It was the season opener for both teams.

The Panthers got off to a quick start in the game. Sophomore Jeremy Ham scored on a breakaway in the fourth minute for a 1-0 lead.

Fox answered for Ferrum in the 10th minute. Fox beat sophomore goalkeeper Donnie Palmer on a breakaway of his own to tie the game at 1-1. The game remained tied at halftime.

Ferrum got the game-winner from Fox five minutes into the second half. Eddy Funes flicked a pass to Fox, who put the ball into the back of the net for a 2-1 lead.

Funes added an insurance goal for Ferrum in the 60th minute. Palmer blocked a shot from Fox, but Funes scored off the rebound to make it 3-1.

Ferrum had a 15-10 shot advantage, including a 9-5 shots on goal edge, in the game. Palmer finished with six saves.

The Panthers play tournament host Emory & Henry on Sunday at 2:30.
