Panthers hold off Piedmont for 2-1 win

LaGrange College stopped a two-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over Piedmont College at Panther Field on Wednesday. The Panthers upped their record to 5-4, while the Lions fell to 8-5.

LaGrange got a first half goal from Matt Sherman and a second half goal from Cameron Williams. The Lions' goal came on a penalty kick by Nick Weatherby in the second half.

Donnie Palmer had four saves in goal for the Panthers. He stopped Sidney Smith's shot in the final seconds in front of the goal to preserve the win.

Sherman's goal came in the 33rd minute of the first half. He hit a line drive into the far upper corner from inside the 18, beating Lion goalkeeper Brian Gaid for a 1-0 lead.

Williams gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the 74th minute. He beat two defenders to the goal on the right side and sent his shot past Gaid for the score. It was Williams' team-leading fifth goal of the season.

The Lions cut the Panthers' lead in half six minutes later. Weatherby beat Palmer on the penalty kick to make it 2-1.

The Panthers play at Covenant on Saturday at 1 p.m.
