Men's Basketball: Panthers shut down Oglethorpe 77-56 at Maryville Classic

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - LaGrange shut down Oglethorpe 77-56 in the opening game of the Maryville Classic on Saturday.

The Panthers upped their season record to 3-1 with their third straight win over the Stormy Petrels (1-3). They will face No. 18 Emory on Sunday.

"We played great half court defense today and most importanly rebounded well," Coach Kendal Wallace said. "We are growing as a team. There are a lot of things we could have done better."

Mike White led all scorers with 16 points for the Panthers. The senior was 7-for-11 from the floor, including making his only 3-point attempt in the game. 

Mark Wagner and Elijah Adedoyin each had 11 points. Alex Bonner had eight points and a team-best nine rebounds.

The Panthers never trailed in the game. Braxton Ford hit a trey to open the game as the Panthers hit 6-of-11 from 3-point range in the first half. They finished the game with 14, the most since making the same number against Berry on Jan. 8, 2014.

Wagner's 3-pointer put the Panthers up 22-12 with under 12 minutes left in the half. Adedoyin's two free throws gave the Panthers a 48-32 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Panthers led by as many as 24 points. The Stormy Petrels never got closer than 15 points. 

The Panthers held an opponent under 60 points for the first time since beating Covenant 58-54 during the 2012-13 season.
