Men's Basketball: Panthers prevail 95-89 in overtime over Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga. - LaGrange prevailed 95-89 in overtime over Piedmont in a USA South game Wednesday. The win improved the Panthers to 12-8 overall and 6-3 in the conference.

Mark Wagner led five Panthers in double figures with 20 points. Denzel Robinson followed with 17 points, with Braxton Ford and Nick Mitchell having 14 each and Patrick Dugger with 10.

The Panthers used a 20-3 run over the final 7:10 of the first half to lead 44-25 at the break. Wagner had 14 of his points in the half.

Nick Mitchell's basket to open the second half gave the Panthers their largest lead, 46-25. They still held a 51-33 lead with 14:39 remaining after a 3-pointer from Ford.

Piedmont (7-11, 2-6 USA South) mounted a comeback over the next eight minutes. Outscoring the Panthers 34-15, the Lions took a 67-66 lead on a pair of free throws from Brad Edwards. Edwards led all scorers with 27 points.

The lead changed hands six times for the rest of regulation. Mitchell's two free throws tied the game at 80 with 10 seconds left. Wagner made a steal at the other end but his potential game-winner was off the mark as the game went to overtime.

The Panthers never trailed in the extra period. Dustin Baxter opened the scoring with a jumper, and a 3-pointer from Wagner gave the Panthers a 90-86 cushion. The Panthers added five straight free throws to go up by nine, before the Lions hit a trey for the 95-89 final.

The Panthers play at conference-leading Maryville on Saturday. Tip-off is 4 p.m.
