Ferrum edges Panthers 68-66 with buzzer beater
LaGrange took undefeated Ferrum to the wire before falling 68-66 at Mariotti Gymnasium on Thursday afternoon. J.T. Edwards' shot at the buzzer kept Ferrum (11-0) unbeaten as the Panthers fell to 1-11.
Senior Nic Whitfield led the host Panthers with a game and season-high 23 points. Denzel Robinson had 12 points, 10 coming in the second half.
Marcus Vaughn had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Blake Craft scored all of his 11 points in the second half.
Keith Crump and Derek Mitchell each had 14 points for the visiting Panthers. Mitchell recorded his ninth double-double of the season with a game-high 11 rebounds. He scored all of his points in the second half.
LaGrange rallied from 14 points down in the opening minutes of the second half Ferrum scored the first seven points of the half to open up a 35-21 lead.
Robinson finished a 15-4 run for the host Panthers with a three-point play to make it 39-36 with 14:57 left. Crump pushed Ferrum's lead to nine, 48-39, with a 3-pointer two minutes later.
Craft hit back-to-back long range 3-pointers to tie the game at 55 with nine minutes remaining. From there, the game was tied six times and the lead changed another six times.
Vaughn scored off a driving layup to put the host Panthers up 57-55 with 7:08 left. It was the Panthers' first lead since the 14:16 mark of the first half.
LaGrange took the lead on three more occasions down the stretch. Whitfield's basket with 1:41 put the host Panthers up 64-63.
Mitchell made 1-of-2 free throws with 15 seconds left to put Ferrum up 66-64. The host Panthers hurried the ball up for a final shot.
Stephen Tuck was fouled going to the basket by Ferrum's Marshall Hamilton with three seconds left. Tuck sank both of the free throws to tie the game at 66.
Ferrum's Marcus Mayo got the ball out to Edwards. Edwards buried a jumper from just inside the 3-point arc at the buzzer for the 68-66 final.
LaGrange will host Pensacola Christian College on Thursday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m.
