ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The LaGrange golf team is 13th after Tuesday's first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship. The Panthers had a team score of 304 over the par 71 Mendon Golf Club course.
"We had some who played well today and others who had a tough day," Coach Lee Richter said. "You have to keep it in play to score but if you spray it, the course will bite you. We'll have a lot of work to do tomorrow."
Junior Logan Lanier shot a 1-over par 72 and is tied for ninth in the individual standings. Lanier played his last 10 holes at 2-under par. Fellow juniors Osborn Theam and Anthony Scolapio followed Lanier with rounds of 75 and 77 respectively. Sophomore Eric Havixbeck finished with a round of 80 and senior Alex Ball rounded out the scoring for the Panthers with an 82.
The Panthers are playing the first two rounds with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) and Luther (Iowa). Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is the first round leader, 11 shots ahead of St. Thomas (Minn.). The Panthers are only five shots back of fifth-place Wittenberg (Ohio).
The Panthers play the second round at the Midvale Country Club. The 41-team field will be cut to the top 15 teams and the top-five individuals not playing on one the top-15 teams after the second round. The final two rounds will be played at Midvale.
