Golf: Lanier, Theam in top 10; Panthers third after first round of Oglethorpe Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Ga. - Juniors Logan Lanier and Osborn Theam are in the top 10 after the first round of the Royal Lakes/Oglethorpe Invitational at the Royal Lakes Golf and Country Club. The seventh-ranked Panthers are in third place in the team standings.

The Panthers had a first round score of 293. They are one shot back of tournament host Oglethorpe and six behind first place Spalding.

The Panthers are one of six USA South teams in the 16-team field. Huntingdon (298), Piedmont (302), Ferrum (309), Greensboro (321), and Maryville (319) trail the Panthers.

Lanier is tied for fourth after a two-under par 70. He had three birdies against only one bogey for his round. Theam shot an even-par 72 and is tied for eighth.

Alex Ball, the only senior, recorded a 75 for his round. Sophomore Jake Nelson was a stroke behind Ball with a 76. Junior Anthony Scolapio rounded out the scoring for the Panthers with an 82.

The tournament concludes Tuesday.
