Golf: Panthers take control of USA South Tournament after second round

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The LaGrange golf team took control of the USA South Tournament at the Benvenue Country Club with another strong round Saturday.

The Panthers, the only team under par in the tournament, had a two-under par total of 286 for a tournament total of three-under par 573. Methodist was the only team to stay within 10 shots of the Panthers during the second round and trails by a total of 18 shots at 591. None of the other seven teams are within 20 shots of the Panthers.

Senior Cory Howard and sophomore Osborn Theam are 1-2 in the individual standings. Howard leads by two strokes after a second round 70 for a 139 total. Theam is two shots back at 141 after leading the Panthers on Saturday with a 3-under par 69.

Ryan Najim slipped to a tie for eighth after a second round 78. Logan Lanier moved into the top 10 with a 1-under 71 for a 147 total. Eric Havixbeck is at 153 after a round of 76.

The teams will play the first nine holes of the third round Saturday and finish the tournament Sunday morning because of an inclement weather forecast.

The Panthers are going for their second straight conference title.
