Golf: Panthers fourth after first round of Emory Spring Invitational

ADAIRSVILLE, Ga. - The LaGrange golf team, ranked second in the latest coaches poll, is fourth after the first round of the Emory Spring Invitational on Monday.

The Panthers posted a team score of 307 over the par 72 Barnsley Gardens Resort course. Methodist leads the 13-team field with a 294, followed by Berry (296), Guilford (301) and the Panthers.

The Panthers, playing in the first group of the day with Centre and Transylvania, got off to a slow start in rainy and windy conditions. They were 12-over par through the first six holes as a team. As the weather improved, the scoring conditions improved also.

Senior Cory Howard was six-over par through 10 holes. He rallied with three birdies over the final eight holes to finish with a 75, tied for 12th in the individual standings.

Freshman Eric Havixbeck and sophomore Osborn Theam were a stroke back of Howard with 76s. Logan Lanier carded an 80 and Anthony Scolapio an 85 to round out the scoring for the Panthers.

The tournament concludes on Tuesday.
