Golf: Howard-led Panthers surge to first round lead at Golfweek Division III Fall Preview

SANDESTIN, Fla.- Senior Cory Howard fired a first round 3-under par 68 on Sunday, as the ninth-ranked LaGrange golf team took the lead at the Golfweek Division III Fall Preview being played at The Raven Course. 

The Panthers had a team score of 2-over par 286, one shot ahead of Texas-Tyler. Methodist, Illinois Wesleyan, Berry and St. Thomas (Minn.) are tied for third, four shots back of the Panthers.

Howard continued his success on The Raven course. He won the tournament as a sophomore in 2012 and last year was second. Howard had five birdies on the day and only two bogeys.

Sophomores Logan Lanier and Anthony Scolapio followed Howard with 1-over par rounds of 72 and are tied for 15th. Sophomore Osborn Theam was two shots back of Lanier and Scolapio with a round of 74. Freshman Jake Nelson, playing in his first tournament of the fall, shot an 83.

The tournament continues Monday and Tuesday. This is the final tournament of the fall for the Panthers.
