INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The NCAA Division III Men's Golf Committee has announced the teams and individuals selected to participate in the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships. The championships will be held May 13-16, at Grandover Resort, in Greensboro, N.C.
The LaGrange golf team, with its USA South Tournament title, was one of 31 conference champions awarded an automatic qualification for the championships. The Panthers are making their seventh appearance in the Division III national tournament.
The rest of the 41-team tournament is made up of 11 at-large selections. The remainder of the 210-man field is five competitors playing as individuals.
Joining the Panthers from the USA South conference is Methodist, which has 10 national championship titles.
The Panthers enter the tournament ranked ninth in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches' Poll and 10th in the Division III Golfstat Relative Rankings.
In the Golfstat rankings, the Panthers have a 264-9 comparative record, including a 12-7 record against Top 25 opponents. They are 14th in the adjusted scoring average (75.1).
Junior Cory Howard is ranked 23rd and freshman Osborn Theam is ranked 26th in the individual rankings.
Howard was the low medalist for the USA South Tournament and a first team All-Conference selection. He also won the Wynlakes Intercollegiate Invitational this season.
Theam was selected as the USA South Rookie of the Year and earned first team All-Conference honors. Theam won the Oglethorpe Fall Invitational during the fall portion of the 2013-14 schedule.
The University of Texas at Tyler defeated Transylvania University to claim its second national title in school history at the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championships. Brad Shigezawa, of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, took home the top individual honors after four days of consistent play. The championships were played at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, in Destin, Fla.
