Golf: Celebration honors team's USA South title, upcoming play in NCAA Division III national tournament

The Panther golf team was honored Tuesday in the Dickson Assembly Room with a celebration of its USA South Tournament title and upcoming play in the NCAA Division III national tournament.

Athletic Director Jennifer Claybrook and LaGrange College President Dan McAlexander addressed the gathering, recognizing the team for its acheivements during the present 2013-14 season.

Head coach Lee Richter introduced each team member and thanked those in attendance for the support given the team during the season.

LaGrange City Councilman Legree McCamey read a proclamation from the city and Mayor Jim Thornton highlighting the team's USA South tournament championship and berth in the national tournament.

The 10th-ranked Panthers will travel to Greensboro, N.C., for the national tournament to be played May13-16 at the Grandover Resort.

The team began the 2013-14 season in September in the Tournament Town Championship Preview played on the same course as the national tournament. The Panthers finished eighth in that event, which featured eight nationally-ranked teams.

Junior Cory Howard and freshman Osborn Theam are ranked 25th and 27th respectively in the Golfstat Division III player rankings. Howard was low medalist at the USA South Tournament, his second win of the spring season.
