Golf: Panthers in first after first round of USA South Tournament

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - LaGrange sits atop the leaderboard after the first round of the USA South Tournament being played at the Benevenue Country Club.

The Panthers lead Greensboro by one shot after a team score of 312. Two shots back is Huntingdon and defending champion Methodist is six shots back.

The course played hard Friday as no golfer finished under par for the day. N.C. Wesleyan's Chris Freeman leads the field after a one-over par 73. Greensboro's John Grimes and Maryville's Joel Thornton are one shot back of Freeman.

Cory Howard and Logan Lanier each had rounds of five-over par 77 and are tied for seventh in the individual standings.

"The greens and around them were difficult and you don't have much green to work with plus it was windy," Howard said. "Its a short difficult designed course that doesn't get you with length, it gets you around the greens and if you miss in the right areas you make bogeys or double bogeys."

Osborn Theam and Freddie Wolford are two shots back of Howard and Lanier after shooting 79s. Anthony Scolapio rounded out the scoring for the Panthers with an 82.

The tournament continues Saturday before wrapping up Sunday.
