Golf: Howard wins individual title; Panthers second as team at Wynlakes Intercollegiate

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Cory Howard won the second tournament of his collegiate career in leading the LaGrange golf team to a second place finish Tuesday at the Wynlakes Intercollegiate played at the Wynlaked Golf and Country Club.

The tenth-ranked Panthers shot a final round team score of 308 for a two-day total of 608. First round leader Wittenberg won the tournament with a 592 total. The Tigers entered the tournament seventh in the Golfstat.com Division III rankings.  

Howard shot a final round 1-over par 73 to win by a stroke over Wittenberg's David Wetterich. Wetterich entered the day with a one shot lead over Howard.

Howard bogeyed the fourth hole but recovered with back-to-back birdies on eight and nine to make the turn at 1-under for the round and the tournament. Wetterich, playing one group ahead of Howard, fell behind by a stroke after shooting 1-over par on the front nine.

Howard ran off four straight pars before a bogey at 14. Wetterich, after a birdie at 11, had bogeys at 16 and 18 to fall two shots back after a round of 75. Howard also had a bogey at 18 to finish at 73 and take the title.

Osborn Theam tied for sixth after a 4-over par 76 and a tournament total of 151. Theam was followed by Anthony Scolapio (77-81=158), Logan Lanier (76-83=159) and Freddie Wolford (84-78=162).

The Panthers play in the Emory Invitational on April 7-8.
