Golf: Panthers lead crowded leader board after first round of Jekyll Island Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. - The LaGrange golf team leads a crowded leader board after the first round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational on Friday. The tournament features 11 of the top 25 teams in NCAA Division III.

The Panthers shot a first round total of 289 on the Jekyll Island Club's Pine Lakes course. They lead Illinois Wesleyan by a shot, with Methodist, Oglethorpe and St. John's Fisher rounding out the top five. Nine teams are within eight shots of the Panthers heading into Saturday's second round.

Freshman Osborne Theam led the Panthers with a two-under par 70, placing him in a five-way tie for second in the individual standing. Theam was even par after a bogey on 16, but finished strong with birdies on the par four 17th hole and par five 18th hole.

Two shots back of Theam, are fellow freshmen Logan Lanier and Anthony Scolapio, who each had rounds of even par 72 and are tied for 10th.

Scolapio's round was highlighted by three straight birdies on 7,8, and 9, making the turn at 1-under par. Lanier had three birdies and bogeys each; having back-to-back birdies on 6 and 7.

Senior Freddie Wolford started the day with four straight bogeys. He recovered with a birdie at 7, then closed out the round with 11 straight pars for a three-over 75.

Cory Howard rounded out the Panthers' scoring with a four-over par 76.
