Golf: Panthers preseason pick to win USA South championship

The LaGrange golf team was picked as the preseason favorite for the 2014 USA South championship as announced by the conference Thursday.

The Panthers, under head coach Lee Richter, are ranked fifth in the current Golfstat Division III national rankings.

The Panthers received eight of 11 first place votes and 95 points as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.

Defending conference champion Methodist University finished second in the balloting with 93 points and the final three first place votes. Placing third in the poll with 81 points was Greensboro College while conference newcomer Huntingdon tallied 70 points to finish fourth. Averett University ranked fifth in the poll with 66 points and was followed in sixth by Ferrum College which totaled 57 points.

Besides Huntingdon, the 2014 season also marks the first for Covenant College. Huntingdon and Covenant are former members of the Great South Athletic Conference. Additionally, William Peace University will field a men's golf team for the first time in the institution's history.

The men's golf spring season gets underway on February 23 as Averett is in action. The Panthers begin with the Callaway Collegiate Invitational on March 1-2 at Callaway Gardens' Mountain View course.

The 2014 USA South Men's Golf Tournament will be played April 11-13 at Benvenue Country Club as a part of the USA South Spring Sports Festival in Rocky Mount, N.C.
