FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga.- Led by junior Cory Howard, the LaGrange golf team took the first round lead Monday at the Royal Lakes/Oglethorpe Fall Invitational.
The Panthers had a team score of 289, one shot better than Huntingdon. Averett and Berry were just two and three shots back, while tournament host Oglethorpe is in fifth; trailing by seven strokes.
Howard had a one-under par 70 over the Royal Lakes Golf & Country club course. He is tied for second with Averett's Onni Hurri and Greensboro's John Grimes. Centre's Tyler O'Daniel is the individual leader after a three-under par 68.
Freshman Osborn Theam tied for fifth with an even par 71. Fellow freshmen Logan Lanier and Anthony Scolapio each had rounds of three-over par 74. Senior Freddie Wolford rounded out the Panther scores with an 80.
In addition to LaGrange, Huntingdon and Averett; the USA South also has Greensboro, Ferrum, and Maryville in the 17-team tournament.
