Golf: Howard's outstanding year ends at Division III championships

DESTIN, Fla. – Cory Howard had his 2012-13 season end Wednesday at the second round of the NCAA Division  III Championships. Howard shot a seven-over par 78 on the Sandestin Golf Resort Raven Course.

The end may have been disappointing but it takes nothing away from an outstanding season for the sophomore.

Howard won the Golfweek Fall Preview Tournament and finished second in three other tournaments. He was selected to the PING Southeastern All-Region team after being named to the USA All-Conference team. Howard was the runner-up in the USA South Tournament and earned All-Tournament honors.

"Cory had a heck of a year for us," Head coach Lee Richter said. "It was quite an honor for him to be one of five individuals to be invited to this tournament and there are a lot of golfers who would have liked to be here."

Howard did not record a birdie during his round Tuesday. He had a bogey and three double bogeys over the par 71 course.

"I prepared for this as much as possible but I had not played in a tournament for a month," Howard said. "It was an unfortunate way to end the season. I drove the ball well off the tee but I had trouble today with my irons."
