Golf: Panthers fifth after first round of USA South Tournament

ROCKY  MOUNT, N.C. - LaGrange is in fifth place after the first round of the USA South Tournament played Friday. The Panthers shot a team score of 314 over the difficult Benvenue Country Club course.

The Panthers are just five shots back of Christopher Newport, who had a 309 total. Top-seeded Methodist and Averett are tied for second with 312 scores, followed by Greensboro (313) and the Panthers.

No individual broke par in the first round. Cory Howard is in second place with a two-over par 74.

Jame Liang is tied for 10th after a first round 78. Alex Ball and Taylor Wynn each had 81s, while David Hensley had an 84.

The tournament continues through Sunday.
