Golf: Panthers have solid first round at Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Enduring harsh conditions, the LaGrange golf team grabbed second place after the first round of the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate tournament Saturday on the resort's Mountain View Course.

Cory Howard and Freddie Wolford led the Panthers to a round of 302, 10 strokes behind top-ranked Oglethorpe. The Panthers had the best round of the day for the six USA South schools in the tournament, including second-ranked Methodist.

Howard was in second place in the individual standings after shooting a two-under par 70. It was Howard's fifth sub-par round of the 2012-13 season. He tied with Wolford and Berry's Jose Garcia for the day's second most birdies with four.

Wolford shot his second-lowest round of the 2012-13 season, finishing with a one-over par 73. James Liang followed Wolford with a 78, then David Hensley with a 81 and Jake Andrews with a 90.
