Golf: Panthers seventh after first round of Jekyll Island Collegiate

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. - Led by Hunter Keener, LaGrange is seventh after the first round Friday at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational. The Panthers tied their team low round of the spring with a 294 total, 15 shots back of first round leader Methodist.

The Panthers are just two shots back of second-ranked Texas-Tyler and four back of third-ranked Illinois Wesleyan. Methodist shot a nine-under 279 team score to lead tournament host Oglethorpe by two strokes.

Hunter Keener turned in his best round of the spring with a two-under par 70 to tie for eighth in the individual standings. Freddie Wolford was two shots back with a even-par round of 72. Hudson Keener had a 73, while Cory Howard and Victor Choi each had rounds of 79.

The Panthers are 15 shots ahead of GSAC rival Huntingdon, who was 24th in the team standings. GSAC schools Maryville and Piedmont were 27th and 30th in the standings.

The three day tournament continues through Sunday.
