MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Maryville topped LaGrange 35-23 in a USA South game Saturday. The Panthers slipped to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Senior quarterback Connor Blair threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns. Blair had season-highs of 39 completions and 57 attempts. He had completions to 10 different receivers, led by Marcus Campell, who had 10 catches. Djeimon Owens had 96 yards on six receptions.
Maryville (5-4, 3-3 USA South) took the opening kickoff and went 57 yards in six plays to take a 7-0 lead. The Panthers tied the game late in the quarter. Blair connected with Kiontai Button for a 17-yard touchdown to finish a nine play 61 yard drive to make it 7-7.
Aided by a kickoff return, the Scots needed to only go 26 yards to regain the lead in the second quarter. Caine Adamson's 2-yard run made it 14-7. Zachary Kudwa's 29-yard field goal cut Maryville's lead to 14-10. But the Scots got a 72-yard pass play on the first play after the kickoff to take a 21-10 lead at halftime.
The Scots stretched their lead to 28-10 in the third quarter, taking advantage of a Panther turnover. But LC rallied, putting together two scoring drives to cut into the Maryville lead. Blair went to Button again for an 18-yard score, then scored from the 1-yard line to make it 28-23 with 13:30 remaining.
But Maryville held the ball for almost eight minutes, driving 83 yards in 18 plays to up the lead to 35-23. The Panthers' final drive of the game ended at the Scots' 1-yard line.
The Panthers host Huntingdon next Saturday for Senior Day. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
