FERRUM, Va. - Ferrum pulled away from LaGrange for a 34-20 USA South win Saturday. The Panthers slipped to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Ferrum (4-2, 2-2 USA South) got a 254-yard rushing performance from Brian Mann. Mann accounted for all five Ferrum touchdowns on runs of 28, 7, 47, 66, and 16 yards. The host Panthers turned four LC turnovers into three touchdowns.
LaGrange's first two drives ended in turnovers. Mann and Ferrum converted them into a 12-0 lead midway throught the first quarter. The Panthers got on the score board with a nine play 95-yard drive at the end of the first half. Connor Blair threw to Kiontai Button from 10 yards out to cut the deficit to 12-7 at halftime.
LC took the second half kickoff and drove to the Ferrum 9-yard line before settling for a 36-yard field goal from Zachary Kudwa. It was Kudwa's longest field goal of his career. He hit a 25-yard field goal later in the quarter to make it 19-13.
The Panthers took their only lead of the game early in the fourth quarter. They put together an 88-yard drive spanning the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth quarter. Blair's 1-yard run capped the drive for a 20-19 lead with 12:54 left.
But Mann answered for Ferrum on the first play after the ensuing kickoff. He raced 66 yards for the go-ahead score, then after an LC turnover, capped his day with a 16-yard run for the 34-20 final score.
The Panthers host USA South foe Greensboro for Homecoming next Saturday. Kickoff is 2 p.m.
