Football: Maryville deals Panthers heartbreaking loss in USA South battle

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Maryville dealt LaGrange a heartbreaking 38-31 loss Saturday in a USA South battle.

Sophomore quarterback Connor Blair threw for 360 yards and three touchdowns for the Panthers (2-5, 2-2 USA South). Junior wide receiver Lavelle Meeks had seven catches for 110 yards and a touchdown. Junior Ervens Oge also had seven catches for 77 yards and a touchdown.

Senior linebacker Nick Raszeja had 14 total tackles, including a quarterback sack, to lead the defense. Junior defensive back Brandon Penn had 10 tackles, while freshman defensive lineman Royce Owens had an interception.

The Panthers led 21-14 at halftime. Blair had two short TD throws in the half; 5 yards to Nick Searcy and one from 6 yard out to Meeks. Jamarkis Holmes' 30-yard scoring run broke a 14-14 tie with 37 seconds left in the half.

Blair capped a 6-play 68-yard drive with a 4-yard toss to Oge to make it 28-14 after three quarters. Zack Kudwa's 28-yard field goal gave the Panthers a 31-21 lead in the fourth quarter.

Maryville got the game winner on a touchdown pass with 39 seconds left in the game.

The Panthers host N.C. Wesleyan next Saturday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
