JV Football: Panthers hold off Fort Benning 16-12

The LaGrange JV football team picked up its first win of the season, holding off Fort Benning 16-12 at Callaway Stadium on Sunday. The Panthers avenged an earlier 33-13 loss to the Doughboys.

Winston Johnson ran for 101 yards on 14 carries for the Panthers. Quarterback Knox Robinson threw two second half touchdowns to help the Panthers build a 16-6 lead.

Fort Benning took the game's opening kickoff and went 71 yards in just four plays to take a 6-0 lead. Running back Emmanuel Batson, who led all rushers with 126 yards, accounted for all of the yards on the drive. He finished the drive with a short 2-yard run for the touchdown.

The Panthers missed scoring opportunities on their first two drives. They reached the Doughboy 1-yard line but fumbled the ball away and on the next drive missed a field goal after reaching the 12.

The defense got the Panthers on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter. Lawson Howell's punt pinned the Doughboys deep in their own territory at the 4. On the first play after the punt, linebacker Connor McNamee dropped Demetrius Carter in the end zone for a safety. The half ended with Fort Benning up 6-2.

The Panthers put together a scoring drive in the third quarter. They went 71 yards in nine plays, aided by a roughing the passer penalty against the Doughboys, to take a 9-6 lead. Robinson threw 6 yards to Sean Morris for the touchdown and Nick Powell added the extra point.

The defense set up the Panthers' next score. Emory Wingard intercepted Blake Powers pass and returned it to the Doughboy 21. Johnson ripped off a 12-yard gain to the 9. Two plays later, Robinson found Will Salako in the back of the endzone for the touchdown. Powell's extra point upped the Panthers' lead to 16-6.

The Doughboys came right back with a score to get back in the game. Powers threw a 43-yard strike to Anthony Neloms to make it 16-12 with 10:40 left.

The Panthers stopped the Doughboys' last drive to seal the win. Tyler Johnson sacked Powers for a big loss and the Panthers eventually took over on downs and ran out the clock.
